Characteristics of the port

* A commercial port, it takes on the responsibility of distribution throughout the Metropolitan area commodities essential in its industrial activities and enriching the lives of the citizens.
* Sundry goods, foodstuffs, paper products, building materials and so forth, these are products characteristically handled at the Port and ones that bear directly on the livelihood of the city and its industries.
* Fulfilling its mandated role as a transport terminal of broad scope linking land and sea, the Port provides facilitated and consistent transport of goods produced and consumed within the extensive range over which it dominates, throughout the Tokyo economic region itself with a population of 40 million, and then sweeping out beyond into the vast regions of the greater Tokyo metropolitan area, Shinetsu and southern Tohoku.
* Responding swiftly to the transport revolution of the 1980's, the Port took early action to greatly enhance its accessibility and forge functionality into its being with terminals for container, ferry and specialized cargo use.
* Warehouses and distribution centers, which complement terminal functions, have been set up in the reclamation areas behind each terminal and arterial routes and other roadways has also been developed to facilitate distribution activities.
